New Address for Entries 2012

Hi, and a happy and peaceful New Year to you all.

Would all Hon Secs please note that I have moved house. The mailing address for 2012 entries is now:-

17 Lady Craig Court, 189 Harlington Road, Hillingdon, Middx. UB8 3JB

I haven't got a land line number yet, but you can get me on my usual mobile number. Gerry and I moved to a supported disabled facility three days before Christmas, and we've just about got it sorted.

Thank you for changing your mailing records again, as most of you will know, we only moved to Ruislip in the summer of 2011 but Gerry couldn't manage the steps. We now have a place in Hillingdon that is on the ground floor! It is also a lot closer to Rosedale Park BC.

Only three months to go. See you on the greens.

That's it for the year folks. What a year! Almost no summer to speak of, very moderate. Thanks for your support once again. I hope that most of you will enter again in 2012 even though it is Olympic year.

Thanks to all of those who now call me 'Eric', as the Gazette implied! I'm sure Eric, our Chairman at Rosedale, was REALLY pleased with the photo.

Just to say that the report in the paper was heavily edited and the most notable news concerning the finals was the magnificent four-timer run up by Dave Parrott and Elaine Putnam. Both bowlers have now run up a title in each of the last four years. Well done to the pair of you. Any side bets between the two of you as to making it five?

That's all then for 2011, I'm off to fulfill my last duty which is to write a report to our sponsors.

Thank you to everyone who has asked after my wife, Gerry. Thirteen weeks in hospital isn't funny, besides the op, which is due on October 3rd.

You should have received 2012 entry forms by now for Hillingdon 2012. Either by email or by post. If you haven't received them by the weekend of the 25th September, (2nd class post), let me know. Preferably, by email, so that I can email you the sheets straight way.

Rowlands at the Double

Jason Rowlands was involved in the match of the day against Attilio Ciampini. The Men's Singles was decided by the very last bowl of the match. In a match of superb quality, watched closely by the vast majority of the 150 strong crowd, this was a real ding dong affair. Ciampini led early on 7-2, Rowlands stormed back to take a narrow 9-7 lead, Ciampini came back yet again. Winning two of the next three ends Ciampini took the lead once again 12-10. The lead was extended to 18-14 but Rowlands wasn't done with, scoring a 2 and then a 4 and taking a 20-18 lead before dropping a count which made it 20-20. The last end swayed this way and that but Rowlands drew the winner with his fourth and final bowl to take the title 21-20.

Rowlands doubled his haul in the Mixed Pairs final as he and partner Elaine Putnam ran away with the title winning 25-6 against Richard and Joyce Westlake of Hayes BC.

The Men's Over 60s was another tight contest. Ernie Norris of Denham led early going into a 9-6 lead. Bob Syme of Ladygate came right back to take a 13-10 advantage. Winning five of the next seven ends Norris got back on terms at 17-17. Finally, a count of three shots saw Norris lift the title 21-17.

Sue Pocknell was also in double title winning form. In the singles she just held the advantage over Sheila Connor throughout the match. Leading 9-4, 13-8 and then 16-14, Pocknell then won five of the last seven ends to win 21-15.

Later in the day, Pocknell joined up with Rosedale clubmate Lyn Ive to win a great pairs contest. A match that saw a scoreline of 4-4 and then 8-8 after twelve ends was then 'decided' with a count of 4 and 1 which saw the Rosedale pair shoot into a 16-9 lead against Pat Roberts and Sue Lawes of Fassnidge. The Rosedale pair held on to win 17-12.

The Men's Pairs was an all-Rosedale affair and it was a game of two halves. 16-7 at half time Bob Matthews and Jason Rowlands went into the last end just 17-18 down against clubmates Roy Clark and Dave Parrott. The latter pair got a single on the last end to lift the trophy.

Jean Matthews' triple had a runaway win in the ladies triples 21-6 against Fassnidge. It was a similar story in the Mixed Triples where both Parrott and Jean Matthews took their second titles. In a match that only lasted 12 ends, they won 24-4 against a Ladygate triple skipped by Tony Waller.

Waller had earlier won the main championship of the Hillingdon season, winning the Hillingdon Open 21-8 against Mick Kirby.

The men's triples was also a tight affair which was probably decided by a count of four on the twelth end. Gary Dear's Uxbridge trio led 4-3, 7-5 before the four happened. Dave Scaresbrook's Denham triple won three of the last five ends but couldn't quite claw it back going down 11-16 in a good tussle.

The 150-strong spectators enjoyed dry if somewhat cool weather and were served up some great finals during the day.

Dennis Hodgkins, the Hillingdon organiser, was quick to credit The AP Taylor Trust with their sponsorship and also paid thanks to volunteers and spectators after the event. He said that next year's finals would take place once again on Bank Holiday Monday in August.

Well that's restored my faith in the bowling spirit.

Tony Waller and Attilio Ciampini were due to play their Hillingdon semi on Tuesday (16th August). Tony, the first named in the draw, got the marker as per Hillingdon rules and guess what - the marker was a no show! The marker who shall be nameless was last seen heading for John O Groats!!!

Tony offered the match to Tilli' but, in true bowls spirit, Tilli refused to take the game in that way. What a decision to make. My congratulations to you Attilio - you're already a winner.

Once again bowls comes out on top.
